Dorian Gray

Over priced candles.

Zak扎克

Right. And your name is?

Dorian Gray

Gray, Dorian.

Zak扎克

Let’s see. Fairweather, Parkhurst, Skinner….I can see a Mrs. Grayson. That’s not you though, is it?

Dorian Gray

No.

Zak扎克

Right. OK. Can you remember who booked youin?

Dorian Gray

Seriously! It’s hardly as if you’re inundated. Gray, Dorian, 4pm.

Zak扎克

Of course. Yes. I see you now. I was on thewrong page, hah. She’s just finishing up with another client. Why don’t youhave a little look around here and I’ll give you a shout when she’s ready foryou.

Dorian Gray

It’s fine. I’ll just wait here

Zak扎克

But we do offer a 15% discount on all Tarot cards for anyone having an in-storereading. And we got a lot of nice new decks in. Maybe the Vampire Tarot or theTarot of the whimsical cats.

Dorian Gray

I’m really not interested. Thank you.

Zak扎克

Not interested…in Tarot? But you came for areading anyway.

Dorian Gray

Let’s just say an acquaintance suggested Icome here. She tells me Madame Pandora’s readings are surprisingly accurate.

Zak扎克

I’ll say. She’s been here a month but I hadmy first reading with her yesterday, and she is just dynamite. Her cards don’tjust predict the future. They make it happen.

Dorian Gray

Do they now?

Zak扎克

Yeah. I didn’t believe it neither. Just youwait and you’ll see what I mean. She’s the real deal. And those cards she uses…

Dorian Gray

Go on.

Zak扎克

I’ve never seen anything like them. It’slike they talk to you. Gives me theshivers just thinking about it. I mean people look to Tarot for clarity– they’re confused about how they feel, don’t know what they want, yada yadayada. But with Madame Pandora, it’s like she reaches inside your heart, pullsout your deepest wish and somehow it comes true.

Dorian Gray

And after your little reading yesterday, what happened?

Zak扎克

Well, nothing yet. But it was sorefreshing, like there was a weightoff my shoulders. I mean, I need a fresh start. I’vedone for a while. Don’t get me wrong, running a shop is, uh, all well and good, but I wannaget into music, see? And thanks toMadame Pandora, I reckon I’m gonna set the world on fire.

Dorian Gray

Good luck with that.

Another Client

You were right. She’s absolutely amazing.

Zak扎克

Isn’t she? Have a lovely day now.

*Client walking out*

Zak扎克

Another happy customer. Madame Pandorashould be ready for you now. It’s through those doors, then first door on theright.

Dorian Gray

*walking in*

Zak扎克

Make the most of it, mate. Enjoy it.

Track 2

*Entering a room*

Madame Pandora (Gwynne)

Welcome, seeker.

Dorian Gray

Hmm, does it have to be so dark in here?

Gwynne格温

Oh, I keep the curtain shut so we don’thave to look out on the alleyway during the reading. It tends to kill the mood. Now come on, seat yourself down. I’m Madame Pandora. You look a littleconfused.

Dorian Gray

You are not quite what I was expecting.

Gwynne格温

Oh, you were expecting Madame Pandora to beall flashing eyes and flowing robes, not short Gwynne wearing a blue cardigan.Between you and me, I just wanted something with a bit of a ring to it and Pandora took my fancy. Areyou familiar with the story of Pandora, Mr. ......?

Dorian Gray

Gray and yes I am. But I get the feelingyou have your own particular take on it.

Gwynne格温

Everyone will see something different, likemy cards. In the story the great god Zeus gives Pandora a beautiful box buttells her not to open it. And like everyone who’s told not to do something.

Dorian Gray

How can she resist?

Gwynne格温

Em hmm. Exactly. So she opens the box andall the bad things in the world come flying out of it. Luckily she looks againand sees hope is still left at the bottom, the one thing that helps us throughlife difficulties.

Dorian Gray

So you think it’s all that simple? Thathope makes the world a better place?

Gwynne格温

Of course, hope led me to where I am today. And it’s hope, of a better future at least, thatleads people to consult the Tarot. You see, when my husband passed a few yearsago, I started looking for ways to bring more meaning into my life. I had my Aura read, my Chakras cleansed. Itried Gong therapy, colour therapy, even colonic irrigation, not themost pleasant experience. The thing is, even though it was all fascinating. Noneof it felt quite me. You know? But I never gave up hope. I always said I’d findmy own path in the end. And I did.

Dorian Gray

And that path is Madame Pan... Sorry, I can’tkeep calling you that. What is your real name?

Gwynne格温

Gwynne, or Gwynnie, if you prefer.

Dorian Gray

I see. Gwynne, hmm you’re right. It doesn’tquite have the same air of mystery as Pandora. Still my question stands, isthis really what you think you’re here for? A bit of mumbo jumbo with Tarotcards.

Gwynne格温

With these particular cards, Mr. Gray. TheHeart’s Desire Tarot.

As soon as I set my eyes on this deck, Iknew I would do anything to own it. Of course, I didn’t have to do much, except hand over an awful lot ofmoney. In truth, Mr. Gray, I’m just like you.

Dorian Gray

Oh, I doubt that very much.

Gwynne格温

It’s true. I’m nothing special, just anordinary person like everyone else who comes here. I don’t read minds, or have visions, but with these cards we have a bond. Ilet them do the talking.

Dorian Gray

I can’t imagine you letting anyone else dothat.

Gwynne格温

Hmm, am I going on a bit? I’m sorry. I’m sureyou’re a very busy man. So, before we get started, have you any questions?

Dorian Gray

Yes, where did you get them, the cards?

Gwynne格温

eBay! Would you believe?

Dorian Gray

Hahah, of course! Where else!

Gwynne格温

That doesn’t make them any less powerful,Mr. Gray. And the Heart’s Desire reading may be simple and straight forward. But I guarantee it will change your life forever. Have you any previousexperience of the realms beyond?

Dorian Gray

Not to speak of.

Gwynne格温

And have you ever had your Tarot read?

Dorian Gray

Not for a while and I am afraid it wasn’tall that memorable. I was told the usual nonsense that I will meet people, havenew experiences, travel the world.

Gwynne格温

Well, I promise you. You’ve never had a readinglike this one. Look at the deck. You can see for yourself that the cards aredifferent. This is the only remaining Heart’s Desire deck in the country, possibly the world. Even the box is special. Hand carved elm with gilded inlay and here, can yousee the pattern of dancing skeletons around the edge?

Dorian Gray

The Danse Macabre[1]

Gwynne格温

Oh, Skeletons aren’t always macabre. I think these ones are rather lovely.

Dorian Gray

I mean, it’s in allegory, “the dance ofdeath”.

Gwynne格温

Oh, oh, yes, maybe. Either way, these cardsare very, very old.

Track 3

Gwynne 格温

Would you like to remove them from the box?I need you to handle them. Tune in.

Dorian Gray

As you wish.

*Dropping the cards*

Ahhh, they burned me! How did you do that?

Gwynne 格温

I don’t know. That...that’s never happenedbefore. Let me see your hands. There are no marks. You’ve not been burned.

Dorian Gray

I thought parlour tricks had gone out offashion. What next? Ectoplasmand table-rapping?

Gwynne 格温

I can ensure you, Mr Gray, I didn’t do athing. It was the cards. Perhaps it was your subconscious. You were expectingsomething to happen so imagined the cards feel hot when you went to handlethem. The mind is a powerful thing. You are right, go on.

Dorian Gray

Yes.

Gwynne 格温

In that case, the Heart’s Desire readinguses four cards, one for each chamber of the heart. I deal them face out in asquare like this. You see, the first three cards describe your past, presentand future.

Dorian Gray

And fourth?

Gwynne 格温

The fourth is called the Contract Card. Asyou turn it over, you enter into a contract with the deck. The card revealsyour heart’s greatest desire. And you allow the deck to make it real. Shall webegin?

Dorian Gray

Let’s.

Gwynne 格温

Hmm.

Dorian Gray

Uh-huh?

Gwynne 格温

The first card reveals the present. Youhave drawn the Hermit, Mr. Gray, a card of introspection, isolation, loneliness. Look deep into the card and tell me what you see.

Dorian Gray

A man on top of a mountain.

Gwynne 格温

A man? Look closer, Mr. Gray.

Dorian Gray

No, no, not a man. A skeleton. Well, it’shard to tell. The faces... it’s a blur. Well sometime it’s a man’s face then it’sa... a bleeding skull.

Gwynne格温

I see.

Dorian Gray

Well, which is it? Which should it be?

Gwynne 格温

It’s both, Mr. Gray. Isn’t it clever? I don’tknow how it works, but the artist who produced this deck was truly somethingelse.

Dorian Gray

Oh, I can’t look anymore. Hmm, it’s strange– when you focus on one part of the picture, the rest of it slips away.

Gwynne 格温

The images are metaphors, Mr. Gray. TheHermit has many faces – Satan, Cronus, Father Time, an ancient man who symbolisesthe flow of the years, and the effects they have on the body. Would that meananything to you?

Dorian Gray

Not a thing. Continue!

Gwynne 格温

Very well. In the second position, todescribe your past, you have drawn the Devil. A challenging card, Mr. Gray. Itmight ask what enslaves you.

Dorian Gray

No, I’m sorry. These cards are grotesque. How can you even look at them?

Gwynne 格温

Fear is a very personal thing, Mr. Gray. One man’s nightmare is another man’sdaydream.

Dorian Gray

But what are those creatures? They’re inchains, as if they are staring right at me moving closer. How is that possible?I think we should move on to the third card.

Gwynne 格温

My,my, Mr. Gray. You are a sensitive soul.

Dorian Gray

The third card, please.

Gwynne 格温

Of course. The thirdposition displays the future. Here you have the Seven of Cups, a card ofchoices.

Dorian Gray

Choices?

Gwynne 格温

We see a man standingbefore a wall of golden cups, each one offering something different:

a snake, a shroud, atower, a dragon, but which one should he choose?

Dorian Gray

Each of your cups is ahuman skull, which mean what? Each choice is poisoned?

Gwynne 格温

Any choice has both a positiveand a negative. This card simply reminds us that some choices are real, andothers are mere fantasy.

Dorian Gray

Ah-huh.

Gwynne 格温

I promise you, anydoubts you may have will pass with the final card. It shows you what you trulydesire. And everything else just falls into place. Are you ready, Mr. Gray? Youcan turn the final card whenever you choose. Let them speak to you.

Cards

Dorian! Dorian!Dorian! Doooorian!

道连!道连!

Gwynne 格温

Do you already think you know what your heart’sdesire is? Or will it be a surprise, do you think? You can turn the cardwhenever you’re ready.

Cards

We can see your heart’sdesire Dorian. We can see your heart’s desire, your heart...

Dorian Gray

Oh, they’re in myhead! I can hear they are talking to me. Oh, can’t you? How are you doing this?*Standing up*

Gwynne 格温

Please, sit down, Mr.Gray. Take a few deep breaths. Let me fetch you a glass of water.

Dorian Gray

No, I just need to...uhhhh...leave.Get some air.

Gwynne 格温

You haven’t finishedthe reading. If you don’t turn over the last card, you haven’t made yourcontract.

Dorian Gray

Aren’t you listening?I’ve had enough!

Gwynne 格温

But you’ll never knowyour heart’s desire. You will never get your heart’s desire.

Dorian Gray

Maybe that’s a goodthing... *opening the door and leaving*

Track 4

Dorian Gray

Ahh.

Zak扎克

Are you all right?

Dorian Gray

I am fine.

Zak扎克

It’s quite intense, isn’t it? What was it in the end?

Dorian Gray

What do you mean?

Zak扎克

Your heart’s desire. It’sfine if you’d rather not say.

Dorian Gray

I am afraid that Ididn’t get that far. Why, what was yours?

Zak扎克

The Tower.

Dorian Gray

The Tower.

Zak扎克

I know! Most peoplewould think that was a bad card to get, right? Collapsing buildings engulfed inflames. I mean, it’s not a pretty cardat the best of times. So with that deck, oh, it freaked the hell out ofme.

Dorian Gray

But then somethingchanged. You saw something different?

Zak扎克

Pandora showed me. It’ssymbolic, you see, a sort of a wakening. I need to break down the structures I’vesurrounded myself with before I can move on them the rest of my life.

Dorian Gray

And that’s good?

Zak扎克

Yeah. I’ve beenrunning this place for a while now. I reckon it’s time to spread my wings.

Dorian Gray

So your heart’s desirewas change.

Zak扎克

Yeah. I think so. It’sall the cards told me.

Dorian Gray

Well, I hope it allworks out for you

Zak扎克

You really shouldfinish your reading, you know. You didn’t get your last card. That’s theimportant one. Why don’t you go back in, give it another go?

Dorian Gray

Because unlike some, Idon’t make contracts without reading the small print.

Zak扎克

What do you mean?

Dorian Gray

There’s always a priceto pay.

Zak扎克

If you are suggestingI didn’t pay for my reading, well, no, I didn’t technically, but I swap it forhalf an hour of Reiki and Gwynnewas fine with that.

Dorian Gray

Good God! I am nottalking about Gwynne! Who cares if she got paid or not. I am talking about thecards! They have power, real power. I felt when I touched them. I heard them inmy head. They’re the ones you are making a contract with, not Gwynne. They’rethe ones offering you your heart’s desire. But what do they want in return?

Dorian Gray

Can I get yousomething to drink?

Dorian Gray

No, thank you. I amfine.

Waiter服务生

*Sighs*

Dorian Gray

Was there somethingelse?

Waiter服务生

Eh, it’s just that...Well you’ve been there foralmost two hours and ... yes, I know the sign says free wifi but the assumptionis......I mean, most of people don’t just ask for the password without orderingsomething.

Dorian Gray

In which case I’llhave a whisky, large, straight up, single malt, the older the better. Now ifyou don’t mind, I have a call to make.

*Dialing phone* *

Victoria

You’ve reached theinbox of Victoria Lowell, you lucky thing. If you’d like to leave me a message,I’ll get back to you sooner than you’d think. *Beep.....*

Dorian Gray

Victoria! Hi, it’sDorian. You will be pleased to know I went to see her as you suggested. But guesswhat, you were wrong! She’s nothing but a little old woman in a cardiganlooking for mystical kicks. Saying that, she has managed to get her hands onsomething called a Heart’s Desire deck of Tarot cards. Now I don’t know exactlywhat they are - cursed, possessed, whatever, but there’s something not quiteright. Anyway, the idiot in the shop let slip some of her previous clients’names. So I looked them up: Grayson, Fairweather, Skinner, Parkhurst. It’samazing what you can find out on the Internet, isn’t it? Anyway, it turns outthey all have one thing in common. But I’m guessing you knew that already. They’reall dead, Victoria, every single one of them.

*Opening the door* *

Zak扎克

Sorry, we’re closed.

Dorian Gray

Is Gwynne here?

Zak扎克

Oh, it’s you! No, I’mafraid Madame Pandora has gone home for the day. And I am shutting up early. Igot some news. This whole block is being developed into luxury flats. Themystic world will have to close.

Dorian Gray

Congratulations.

Zak扎克

Oh yeah, I know itdoesn’t sound great, but it is. I will be getting a lot of money incompensation. And remember how I said my life was about to change? Well, todayis the day! As of now my future is wide open.

Dorian Gray

Look I am sure that’sterrific, couldn’t be happier but I really need speak to Gwynne quite urgently.Do you know how I can get hold of her?

Zak扎克

Right, you want yourlast card, don’t you? She said you’d come back. Look, I know I shouldn’t dothis, but she was keen to meet you again. So, here’s her address.

*Writing address*

There you go. As Isay, I’m sure she won’t mind. She was a bit worried because you didn’t finishyour reading. She’ll probably be pleased to...*Door open and shut closed*…seeyou.

Track 5

*Knocking the door* *

Gwynne 格温

Who is on the door? I am coming.

*Opening the door* *开门*

Mr. Gray! Oh, it’sgood to see you again. The cards told me you’d be back. Please, come inside.Sitting room’s on the left. Would you like a cup of tea?

Dorian Gray

No, thank you. I won’tbe staying long.

Gwynne格温

Of course, you justwant your final card.

Dorian Gray

No. That’s not why I’mhere. I actually have a few questions about your other clients. Tell me, haveany of them come back for a second reading?

Gwynne格温

Well, no. But that’sno surprise, really, is it? Once you have your Heart’s Desire come true, whywould you need another reading?

Dorian Gray

Well, that’s hardlythe greatest business model.

Gwynne格温

No, hahah, I supposednot. Hahahah. I mean, I know I charge for the readings, but that’s not reallywhy I do it. As I said before, I just like bringing hope to other people.

Dorian Gray

But if your clientsdon’t come back, how can you be sure that they’ve achieved their Heart’s Desire.

Gwynne格温

Oh, I still hear fromthem. Sometimes they phoned to say thank you. Or on a couple of occasions, things happened right there in the shop. For instance, one lady wanted morethan anything to get back together with her ex husband and just after thereading, her phone rang. And do you know, it was her husband asking if theycould meet up. Oh, the look on her face was priceless.

Dorian Gray

And this woman’s namewould be what?

Gwynne格温

Oh, I am not sure Iremember.

Dorian Gray

Mrs. Grayson, perhaps?

Gwynne格温

That rings bell. But,why?

Dorian Gray

Because Mrs. AngelaGrayson was found dead in the river last Thursday night. Police arrested her estrangedhusband shortly afterwards and charged him with her murder.

Gwynne格温

Oh, but that’s ...that’s dreadful.

Dorian Gray

Isn’t it? Can you thinkof anyone else whose dreams came true right before your eyes?

Gwynne格温

Oh, well, there was ateacher who was having some problems at work, I mean. She phoned me said she’dbeen offered the head teacher’s job at another school.

Dorian Gray

And that would be Mrs.Fairweather, yes?

Gwynne格温

I think so. Yes. Howdo you know all this?

Dorian Gray

Violent deaths tend tomake the news. This is all public knowledge. Mrs. Fairweather committed suicideby throwing herself in front of the Gatwick Express shortly after learning thather school was being closed.

Gwynne格温

These things areterrible, I agree. But they’ve got nothing to do with me.

Dorian Gray

Not you. You areright. Not you, but those cards.

Gwynne格温

Cards?

Dorian Gray

It is the cards thatmake people’s dreams come true, isn’t it? You said so yourself.

Gwynne格温

You can’t blame a deckof cards for two dreadful accidents.

Dorian Gray

Suicide is hardly anaccident. And did I say two? I meant four. There’s also Mrs. Parkhurst hit by adrunk driver outside the dream house she just bought. And Mr. Skinner, I don’tneed to ask what his heart’s desire was, died of a heart attack in bed with hisnew 22-year-old girlfriend. That’s 4 of your clients who have died in the lasttwo weeks. The cups are poisoned, Gwynne, whatever you choose and everyone yougave a reading to ends up dead.

Gwynne格温

Not everyone. When Istarted, I conducted a reading for myself and I’m still here.

Dorian Gray

Yes, because the cardsneed you. You’re the one doing their dirty work, introducing them to all thesepeople, bringing hope to all these lives. What was your heart’s desire then?Ah? To become a successful Tarot reader?

Gwynne格温

No. The Tarot isn’tspecific in that way. The images are subtle. They are open to interpretation.

Dorian Gray

Of course they are.

Gwynne格温

I wanted to connectwith the spiritual world in a way I couldn’t before. I’d always envied peoplewith that kind of connection – spiritual people, the ones who ran the workshopsI went to, the therapists I saw. I wanted to be just like them, special.

Dorian Gray

You’re a dabbler,Gwynne. That’s all. You don’t have a spiritual bone in your body and that’swhat’s made you such easy pray for whatever the hell is living inside thosecards.

Gwynne格温

What are you saying?

Dorian Gray

Someone with realpower wouldn’t have gone near that deck. Think about Pandora, Gwynne. Why didZeus give the box to her? Because he knew she would look inside. Pandora wasvain and greedy, and stupid. Someone else might have thought a little harder, suspected trap not Pandora. Perhaps she just wanted to be special, too. Butwhen she opened the box, all the evils in the world flew out regardless.

Gwynne格温

You’re making it soundworse than it is. That’s not the end of the story. Pandora also gives the worldthe gift of hope.

Dorian Gray

Myths are like Tarotcards, Gwynne. The images are subtle. They are open to interpretation. Hope isjust as much an evil as envy, hatred, disease, and all the other nasty thingsthat leap out of that box. If it wasn’t, why would Zeus have put it in therewith all the others?

*Fire truck siren* *

What is going on outthere? Oh it’s coming from a few streets away.

Gwynne格温

The shop!

Dorian Gray

Ah?

Gwynne格温

Oh no, I gave Zak areading a couple of days ago. You don’t think...

Dorian Gray

Oh, come on.

Gwynne格温

Oh!

Track 6

*Running* *

Dorian Gray

Oh, looks like we’retoo late.

Gwynne 格温

Zak! No! *Crying*

Dorian Gray

No Gwynne, no. Let theparamedics do their job.

Gwynne 格温

Tower, He has the Tower.

Dorian Gray

The burning building, haha, not such a fresh start after all.

Gwynne 格温

I have to go with him.

Dorian Gray

You are not goinganywhere.

Gwynne 格温

Mr. Gray, please, letgo of me.

Dorian Gray

I think we have morepressing matters to attend to, don’t you?

Gwynne 格温

What do you mean morepressing matters?

Dorian Gray

I mean you have aclient with an unfinished reading. I’d like my final card now.

Gwynne 格温

You can’t be serious.

Dorian Gray

Do I look as if I’mjoking?

Gwynne 格温

But if you take acard, it will kill you. You’re right. You’ve seen what happens. Why would youwant to do that?

Dorian Gray

Because strange as itmay seem, Madame Pandora, in the midst of all this devastation, I’m experiencingsomething I haven’t felt in a very long time: hope.

Gwynne 格温

Hope? You want to die?

Dorian Gray

Don’t be ridiculous! Beenthere done that! And those cards can try as hard as they like. But I doubt they’llhave much luck, unless that really is my heart’s desire.

Cards

Dorian, Dorian, Dorian,Dorian...

Dorian Gray

Give me the cardsGwynne.

Gwynne 格温

I can’t.

Dorian Gray

I can hear themcalling to me. Besides, you wanted me to finish my reading, didn’t you? Nowgive them here!

Gwynne 格温

Ah! Ah!

Dorian Gray

*Grabbing the cards* *

Thank you! And sorevealed for the very first time the true desire of Mr. Dorian Gray’s heartis... hahhahah, well, isn’t that perfect?

Gwynne 格温

What is it? The Lovers!

Dorian Gray

Hahahahah.

Gwynne 格温

Oh, That’s not a badcard, not a bad card at all. Love can’t kill you.

Dorian Gray

Do you truly believethat? Look at the picture, Gwynne! Two rotting corpses riding together in apassionate embrace, tasteful forever.

Oh! You should gohome. The fire is getting worse.

Gwynne 格温

Not without my cards.

Dorian Gray

These? Oh Gwynne, tellme. At the end of her story, do you know what happened to Pandora?

Gwynne 格温

No.

Dorian Gray

Of course you don’t,neither do I. That’s because the story isn’t about her. Oh she gets her name inthe title but she is not important, she is not special, she’s only there toopen the box. Just like you were there to deal with these cards. And if it hadn’tbeen you, it would’ve been someone else. And after you, another Pandora, andanother and another! I’m sorry Gwynne. But these cards have to be destroyed.*Throwing cards into fire*

Gwynne 格温

Ohhhh, my cards! Youdidn’t have to do that!

Dorian Gray

Really? You can stillsay that after all you’ve done?

Gwynne 格温

All I ever wanted wasa connection.

Dorian Gray

And that’s what makesthis whole thing so much worse. You invited them in. You allowed all this tohappen. I’m sorry the cards spared you, Gwynne, because now you have to livewith the knowledge that you were responsible for all those deaths. I only hopeit isn’t too late for Zak. Goodbye Pandora!

Gwynne 格温

No....*Crying*

*Footsteps*

*Taking out keys*

Dorian Gray

Well, it’s good to behome... *Finding the door open* or not?

Funny! I don’tremember leaving the door open. I know there’s someone here.

Victoria, if that’syou...

Visitor 访客

Who’s Victoria?

Dorian Gray

What? ! No, no, thiscan’t be happening.

Visitor访客

Oh, do you know, that’sexactly what I thought. Hello, Dorian.

Dorian Gray

Toby?
